NELSON MANDELA BAY, South Africa, November 6, 2026 – Chinese automotive manufacturer Foton has showcased its latest electric commercial vehicle, the eView Connect, in South Africa, offering a preview of a potential addition to the country’s growing electric vehicle market.

The vehicle was displayed during the recent BAIC Africa Partners Conference in Nelson Mandela Bay, where Foton presented it as a possible electric alternative to its diesel-powered View C2 panel van.

However, the company has not yet approved the eView Connect for the South African market, with a local launch potentially only being confirmed in 2027.

According to Citizen Motoring, which reported on the vehicle’s appearance at the conference in an article by motoring journalist Charl Bosch published on November 6, the eView Connect is based on Foton’s Cavan commercial vehicle range. The Citizen

A new electric commercial vehicle

Although it carries the Foton badge, the eView Connect is derived from the Cavan C1, a model developed and marketed under Foton’s Cavan brand.

The vehicle was first presented outside China earlier in 2026 as the Cavan C1. Its Foton-branded equivalent made its appearance at the Nelson Mandela Bay conference in the Max specification.

The Max is positioned between the standard wheelbase version and the long wheelbase high roof derivative, making it the middle option in the model range.

In Australia, the vehicle is sold under the Cavan name rather than as a Foton or Maxus product.

The example displayed in South Africa was fitted with the larger of the two battery options available in its home markets.

Battery and performance

The eView Connect is powered by a single electric motor positioned on the front axle, delivering 125kW of power and 210Nm of torque.

Its 66.6kWh battery provides a claimed driving range of 310km, while its maximum speed is rated at 120km/h.

The electric configuration offers businesses an alternative to conventional diesel-powered delivery vehicles, particularly for commercial operations involving regular transportation of goods.

Cargo capacity and dimensions

The van measures 5,185mm in length, with a wheelbase of 3,400mm. Its height stands at 1,960mm, while its width measures 1,810mm.

Its exterior configuration includes two sliding side doors and split barn-style rear doors, allowing access to the cargo compartment from different positions.

Foton claims a cargo volume of 7.5 cubic metres, a maximum payload of 1,200kg and a load bay measuring 3,100mm in length.

Developed on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, the model has a total cargo space rating of 8,500 litres and ground clearance of 190mm.

These specifications place the eView Connect within the electric light commercial vehicle category, targeting businesses that require practical transportation capacity alongside battery-powered mobility.

Interior equipment and safety technology

While Foton has not released the complete specifications of the South African showcase model, the Australian-market Cavan version provides an indication of the equipment customers could expect.

Its standard features include 16-inch steel wheels, LED headlights, electric windows and mirrors, air conditioning and an LCD instrument cluster.

The interior also comes with a two-speaker sound system, heated driver’s seat and both Type-A and Type-C USB connections.

Automatic door locking and unlocking are also included.

The vehicle’s safety and driver assistance package comprises dual front airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system, rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system.

Additional technologies include front and rear Cross Traffic Alert, Electronic Stability Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning.

The model also offers Driver Attention Alert, Door Open Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring and Lane Keep Assist.

Other driver assistance features include reverse Automatic Braking and Traffic Jam Assist, providing additional support when navigating traffic and manoeuvring the vehicle.

Foton has yet to confirm whether all these features will be available in the version potentially destined for South Africa.

South African launch still pending

The eView Connect is priced at US$48,990 in Australia, equivalent to approximately R561,611 at a direct currency conversion, before taxes and other applicable charges.

Despite the vehicle’s appearance at the BAIC Africa Partners Conference, Foton South Africa has not approved its introduction into the local market.

According to Citizen Motoring, confirmation of a possible South African launch is likely to come only in 2027.
