JOHANNESBURG – The new Range Rover SV has landed on Southern African roads with a bold claim to being the most luxurious and dynamic full-size SUV yet — and its features speak loudly for themselves.
Built by Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division, the SV doesn’t just push the envelope; it tears it apart. The vehicle weighs 2.5 tonnes, but with a BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine under the hood, it moves with surprising agility. That powerplant churns out 452kW and reaches a top speed of 261km/h — impressive for a vehicle of its size.
TopGear South Africa’s motoring journalist Ntsako Mthethwa recently took the SV for a test drive, exploring its ultra-luxury credentials, ground-breaking engineering and subtle design upgrades. The test drive was shared on video and has since stirred debate on whether this may be the finest Range Rover ever built.
What sets the SV apart isn’t just raw power. It introduces the advanced 6D Dynamics suspension system, which keeps the vehicle composed under any road condition — from city tarmac to dusty backroads. And yes, it’s off-road capable too, although most owners might never leave the tar.
Inside, the SV is unapologetically indulgent. From massaging seats (including hot stone functionality) and deployable footrests to privacy blinds and panoramic roofs, the SV’s cabin reads more like a first-class lounge than a car interior.
Every detail is customisable. Owners can choose from over 200 exterior colours — or go even further. Whether your scarf, cap, or even underwear has a signature shade, the bespoke programme will match it. This same level of detail extends inside, where everything from dashboard colour to seat finishes can be selected individually.
The four-seat layout comes with two high-end entertainment screens, a meridian surround sound system, and dual-tone leather throughout. Still, at the push of a button, it converts to accommodate a fifth passenger — seamlessly.
The SV may carry the iconic Range Rover badge, but it elevates the experience far beyond expectations. While the autobiography trim has long defined quiet luxury, the SV makes a louder, more deliberate statement — one that blends class with commanding presence.
