Kempton Park – Spanish carrier Air Europa has launched its first scheduled service into sub-Saharan Africa, opening a direct aviation corridor between Madrid and Johannesburg that stands to benefit travellers from Eswatini and the broader Southern African region.
The new route, operated three times weekly using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, officially debuted on 24 June 2026, with the inaugural flight departing Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport at 11:45pm before touching down at O.R. Tambo International Airport at 09:50am the following morning.

The expansion was developed in partnership with South African Tourism and local aviation stakeholders, and is aimed at capturing rising travel demand from the Spanish market, where forward booking data and visitor arrivals have shown a sustained recovery trend.
Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport serves as the primary entry point for most Swazi travellers heading to Europe, making the new route a potentially significant addition to regional connectivity.
To extend the reach of the new service beyond Johannesburg, Air Europa has signed a unilateral interline agreement with South African carrier CemAir, effective 23 June 2026. The deal allows inbound passengers from Madrid to connect onto CemAir’s domestic and regional network through a single itinerary with streamlined baggage handling.

Estelle Leray, Alliances and CX Director for Air Europa, said the partnership lays a strong foundation for the carrier’s entry into the sub-Saharan market.
“We are very pleased to move forward with this agreement with CemAir, which will allow our passengers to travel beyond Johannesburg and access new destinations across Southern Africa in a seamless and efficient way. This partnership not only enhances connectivity and the overall travel experience, but also strengthens Air Europa’s presence in Johannesburg, alongside a solid and well-established partner in the region,” said Leray.
CemAir Chief Commercial Officer Shaniel Singh welcomed the agreement, saying it broadens the airline’s international footprint.
“We are delighted to welcome Air Europa as our newest interline partner. This agreement further strengthens CemAir’s international connectivity and creates additional travel opportunities for our customers. By combining Air Europa’s global reach with CemAir’s extensive Southern African network, we are able to offer travellers a more seamless and convenient journey while supporting tourism and business travel throughout the region,” said Singh.
