NEW DELHI — India and the United States will hold their next trade discussion on Tuesday, Washington’s newly-appointed ambassador to New Delhi, Sergio Gor, announced on Monday. The talks come as stalled negotiations have strained ties and contributed to the Indian rupee hitting a record low.
Gor also revealed that India is expected to be invited next month to join Pax Silica, a U.S.-led initiative aimed at building a complete silicon supply chain covering critical minerals, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence.
Relations between the two countries hit turbulence last year when trade talks collapsed. Former U.S. President Donald Trump responded by doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, including a 25 percent levy in retaliation for New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil. Despite repeated near-agreements since negotiations began in February 2025, no deal has yet been secured, widening the $47 billion goods trade gap.
“Both sides continue to actively engage. In fact, the next call on trade will occur tomorrow,” Gor said while formally assuming his post in New Delhi. He added that discussions will also cover security, counterterrorism, energy, technology, education, and health.
Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that dialogue with Washington is ongoing. Gor described the bilateral relationship as anchored at the highest level. “Real friends can disagree, but always resolve their differences in the end,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously set a target to finalise a trade deal by fall 2025 and to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. India has pledged to purchase up to $25 billion in U.S. energy and increase defence imports to bridge the trade gap.
Following Gor’s comments, Indian markets responded positively. The benchmark Nifty 50 index rose 220 points, trading 0.15 percent higher by midday.
