BMA intercepts cigarette smuggling at Beitbridge

Beitbridge – The Border Management Authority in South Africa has seized illicit cigarettes worth R42 797 at the Beitbridge Port of Entry, using drone surveillance to track the suspects.

Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato said the operation took place on Tuesday as part of the BMA’s 2025/2026 Festive Season Security Plan. Drones captured suspicious movement near the border, allowing officers to swiftly intercept those attempting to smuggle the contraband into South Africa.

“The operation shows how technology is improving border security in vulnerable areas,” Dr Masiapato said. The seized cigarettes have been secured, and the suspects were handed over to the South African Police Services for further legal processing.
