Luanda, Angola – Namibia and Angola have pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation, accelerate existing agreements and expand economic opportunities across key sectors following a ministerial meeting in Luanda on 18 October 2026.

Namibia’s Minister of International Relations and Trade, Ambassador Selma Ashipala Musavyi, co-chaired the ministerial session of the Angola Namibia Bi National Commission with Angola’s Minister of External Relations, Tete António.

The meeting formed part of the inaugural Angola Namibia Bi National Commission, held alongside the state visit of Namibian President Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah to Angola.

Discussions centred on turning the longstanding relationship between the two neighbouring countries into practical economic gains for their citizens, with both governments seeking faster implementation of commitments made through bilateral cooperation frameworks.

Energy, transport, agriculture, water security, trade and investment were identified as key areas requiring closer collaboration. The discussions also covered strategic infrastructure projects expected to support economic development and improve regional connectivity.

Among the priority initiatives are the Baynes Hydropower Station, the Angola Namibia Interconnector Project and a proposed One Stop Border Post at Oshikango in Namibia and Santa Clara in Angola.

The energy projects are central to efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve cross-border power cooperation, while the proposed border facility is intended to facilitate the movement of people and goods between the two countries.

Ashipala Musavyi called for renewed efforts to expand bilateral trade and improve private sector participation in economic cooperation. She also proposed introducing a digital scorecard system to track progress in implementing decisions and commitments made under the Bi National Commission.

The proposed monitoring mechanism is expected to provide a clearer picture of progress on agreed projects and help both governments identify areas where implementation requires additional attention.

The two governments remain committed to working together in the spirit of good neighbourliness and mutual benefit, while advancing priorities within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU).
