MASERU, Lesotho, October 4 Setsoto Stadium in Maseru was filled with thousands of Basotho, regional leaders, diplomatic representatives and international guests on Sunday as Lesotho marked its 60th Independence Anniversary with a colourful celebration of national identity, culture and unity.

His Majesty King Letsie III hosted the celebrations, which were attended by His Majesty King Mswati III of Eswatini, who joined the Basotho nation for the historic milestone. King Mswati III was accompanied by Inkhosikati LaNgangaza, while Eswatini Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Senator Pholile Shakantu was also part of the delegation.

Prime Minister of Lesotho Ntsokoane Samuel Matekane and other senior government officials also attended the celebrations, alongside diplomatic representatives and guests from different parts of the world.

The anniversary brought together people from different walks of life, with the stadium transformed by the country’s national colours of blue, white and green.

The colours carried symbolic meaning throughout the celebrations. Blue represents rain and the sky, white stands for peace, while green represents the land and prosperity.

Basotho waved national flags, sang patriotic songs and cheered as the programme unfolded, creating a festive atmosphere inside the stadium.

The celebrations also featured traditional and contemporary performances by local artists, showcasing Lesotho’s cultural heritage and drawing enthusiastic responses from the crowd.

A ceremonial parade formed part of the programme, adding to the national character of the occasion as Lesotho commemorated six decades since gaining independence.
