GABORONE, Botswana, 14 September 2026: Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman will make a State Visit to Botswana from 16 to 17 September 2026, following an invitation from Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko.
The visit will be Sultan Haitham’s first to Botswana and comes as the two countries seek to deepen their diplomatic and economic partnership after establishing formal diplomatic relations on 14 October 2025.
The two day visit is also expected to build on President Boko’s engagements with Oman, including his working visits to the country in October 2025 and April 2026.
During the visit, Sultan Haitham and President Boko are expected to hold official talks covering several areas of mutual interest, with trade and investment, minerals and mining, energy, infrastructure and logistics, agriculture, tourism and health among the key areas on the agenda.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss ways of expanding practical economic cooperation between Botswana and Oman. Particular attention will be given to investment opportunities identified during President Boko’s engagements with the Oman Investment Authority during his visits to Oman.
As part of his programme in Botswana, Sultan Haitham will tour the Diamond Trading Centre in Gaborone. The visit will provide an opportunity for the Omani delegation to gain a closer understanding of Botswana’s diamond industry while exploring possible areas of cooperation in diamond beneficiation and value addition.
The growing relationship between the two countries has already produced a major energy project. In April 2026, Botswana and Oman marked the ground breaking of a 500MW solar power plant at Mawana in Maun.
The solar project has become one of the most significant outcomes of the emerging bilateral partnership, reflecting the countries’ interest in expanding cooperation in renewable energy and supporting Botswana’s energy development.
Several bilateral agreements are also expected to be signed during Sultan Haitham’s State Visit.
The agreements will cover general cooperation, political consultations, investment promotion, commerce and industry, air services, visa exemption, health cooperation and mining exploration.
The agreements are expected to broaden the institutional framework governing relations between Botswana and Oman while creating opportunities for greater cooperation between their governments, businesses and citizens.
