Pretoria, South Africa – Deputy Minister Botes welcomed Mr. Kopano Masilo, the new Head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in South Africa, during a ceremony presenting his credentials.

The IFRC, known for its vast network of volunteers, tackles humanitarian crises around the globe. With a presence in 191 countries and over 16 million volunteers, the organization provides vital assistance before, during, and after disasters and health emergencies.

Mr. Masilo, a Lesotho citizen, brings a wealth of experience to the role. His 17-year career in civil society encompasses community engagement, public policy, and development aid facilitation. Furthermore, he boasts extensive humanitarian experience, having most recently served as the Lesotho Red Cross Society’s Secretary General since 2017.

Deputy Minister Botes expressed his gratitude for the IFRC’s vital work, particularly their efforts in mobilizing support for KwaZulu-Natal province following the devastating 2022 floods. He emphasized the growing importance of the IFRC’s role due to the increasing number of displaced people and food insecurity caused by conflicts and natural disasters.
