Katsina, Nigeria – June 23rd, 2024 – A brutal attack by gunmen has shaken a rural community in Katsina state, northwest Nigeria. At least seven people were killed and, according to terrified residents, over 100 people, mostly women and children, are feared kidnapped.

The assault unfolded on Saturday night in Maidabino village, Danmusa local government area. Armed gangs, known locally as bandits, have become a persistent menace in the region, routinely targeting communities for kidnappings in exchange for ransom.

Witnesses described a scene of chaos and devastation. Gunmen on motorbikes stormed the village, firing indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee. Local resident Hassan Aliyu spoke of the attackers’ cruelty, stating, “They killed seven people, even burning two children alive. They rampaged for over six hours, destroying our homes and livelihoods.”

Another resident, Auwalu Ismail, revealed a chilling tactic employed by the bandits. “They strategically blocked all roads leading to Maidabino before launching their attack. They then burned down shops, vehicles, and stole our livestock. My wife and over 100 women and children were taken.”

Katsina state police confirmed the attack and the deaths but did not comment on the reported abductions, citing an ongoing investigation. Police spokesperson Abubakar Aliyu Sadiq assured the public of a thorough investigation.

The attack has left the remaining villagers living in a state of terror. Muhammad Sani, whose sister was abducted, spoke for many, stating, “The men who didn’t flee are consumed by fear, desperately waiting for any news of their loved ones.”
