Juba, South Sudan – Despite Sweden’s decision to close its embassy in Juba, both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties. The assurance came during a meeting between South Sudan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Amb. Monday Semaya Kumba, and the Swedish head of office, H.E. Hilding Lundkvist.
The June 20th meeting focused on forging a path forward for the bilateral relationship. Amb. Kumba expressed his appreciation for Sweden’s ongoing support and requested continued backing on the international stage. The discussion encompassed potential exchange visits to solidify the evolving partnership, alongside areas of mutual interest and collaboration.
Humanitarian aid, a pressing concern due to ongoing clashes in Sudan and impending floods in South Sudan, was also addressed. Hon. Kumba underscored the South Sudanese government’s unwavering efforts to promote peace within the nation and the region, specifically in neighboring Sudan.
In response, H.E. Lundkvist reassured Amb. Kumba that the diplomatic relationship would endure and adapt to address shared interests. He recommitted Sweden’s support for South Sudan’s peace process, democratic transition, and peace-building initiatives.
