South African Parliament is set to wrap up its legislative proceedings this week, ahead of the upcoming national and provincial elections on May 29, 2024. Both Houses of Parliament are scheduled to address a range of legislative matters, committee reports, and bid farewell to Members.

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is slated to convene on Tuesday to deliberate on the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill (BELA). On Thursday, the NCOP’s agenda includes discussions on several bills, including the Railway Safety Bill and the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill.

Similarly, the National Assembly (NA) will gather on Thursday to consider various bills, such as the Municipal Demarcation Authority Bill and the Statistics Amendment Bill. The day will culminate with farewell speeches from Members.

In addition to legislative deliberations, several committee meetings are scheduled to review reports and bills, including the Pension Funds Amendment Bill and the General Intelligence Laws Amendment Bill.

Citizens can follow the proceedings live via Parliament’s YouTube channel or Parliament TV on DStv channel 408.

Meanwhile, efforts to rebuild parts of the National Assembly and the Old Assembly buildings, which were damaged in a fire in 2022, are underway. The initial phase involves demolishing structurally unsafe sections, with specialized expertise required due to the buildings’ historical significance. Rehabilitation works are expected to commence by August after the damaged sections are cleared this month.
