In order to prevent a nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, met with the leadership of the Congress on Monday.
The NLC had given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to resolve the naira scarcity issue in the country, threatening to go on strike if the ultimatum elapsed without action. Ngige invited the NLC and the apex bank leadership to the meeting to resolve the matter.
The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was accompanied by two Deputy Governors, Kingsley Obiora (Economic Policy) and Ade Shonubi (Organised Private Sector). The parties held fruitful discussions and the NLC assured that it would not embark on strike, but would report back after the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
