Kaizer Chiefs booked their place in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup after edging Kabuscorp SCP 5-4 on penalties at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
The tie ended 1-1 on aggregate after both teams had won their respective home legs 1-0. Chiefs came into the match under pressure following recent domestic struggles, including a midweek Betway Premiership draw with Marumo Gallants and a 3-1 loss to Sekhukhune United.
The second-leg clash started with Chiefs pushing hard for an early goal, creating several chances but failing to convert. The breakthrough came in the 41st minute when Glody Lilepo capitalised on a rebound from the Kabuscorp goalkeeper to put the home side ahead 1-0 on the day and level the aggregate score at 1-1.
The second half saw both teams pressing for a decisive goal, but despite high tempo and numerous attempts, neither side could find the net. Physicality increased as the match neared full-time, with tackles flying in both directions.
The referee called full-time with the aggregate score still 1-1, sending the tie to a penalty shootout. Chiefs held their nerve to win 5-4 and move on to the next stage of the continental competition.
Kaizer Chiefs return to CAF action after claiming the 2025 Nedbank Cup with a 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates in May, with ambitions to continue their continental campaign.
