YOKOHAMA, JAPAN – The African Union (AU) has outlined four key solutions to address global conflicts and strengthen peace, speaking at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).
Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, said the pathways focus on regional security, multilateral cooperation, stabilisation, and collective responsibility. “Africa is transforming with African-led solutions to confront our challenges,” he said.
Adeoye explained that strengthening regional security includes reconceptualising the African Standby Force to respond to conflicts in Somalia and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The AU has committed US$20 million (about E340 million) to the AU Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia.
He called for multilateral cooperation with partners such as Japan to support conflict prevention and early warning systems. On stabilisation and recovery, Adeoye pointed to quick-impact projects, like rebuilding schools in Liberia, as vital for lasting peace.
On collective responsibility, he noted that investment in people and the environment aligns with the UN Charter and the AU’s Agenda 2063, ensuring sustainable and inclusive solutions across the continent.
