Mbabane — Vuyelwa Karabo Simelane, a fourth-year student at the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), will represent the Kingdom of Eswatini and the SADC region at the 31st ARSO General Assembly in Zanzibar after placing among the top three in the 12th ARSO Continental Essay Competition.

Her achievement was officially recognised at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, where the Eswatini Standards Authority (SWASA) presented her to Minister Mancoba Khumalo on Friday morning. The minister congratulated her on the milestone and handed her E10,000 in recognition of her work.

Simelane’s winning essay advanced through national and regional rounds after she was crowned winner of the Eswatini leg of the competition, which attracted 25 students from various tertiary institutions across the country. She is the first Swati student to secure a continental top-three position since Eswatini joined the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) essay contest.

The competition’s theme this year focused on the role of education about standardisation in shaping African students for sustainable development in the 21st century.

Simelane, who is studying for a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biology at UNESWA Kwaluseni Campus, will travel to Zanzibar for the continental gathering scheduled to begin on 25 June 2025.
