NAIROBI, Kenya: Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto has congratulated Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on his re-election following Zambia’s presidential election held on 13 August 2026.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia declared Hichilema the winner on Tuesday after he secured more than 50 per cent of the vote, allowing him to retain the presidency without a run off.
In a congratulatory message dated 18 August 2026, Ruto said the Kenyan Government and people joined him in congratulating Hichilema and the people of Zambia.
“Your resounding and decisive victory is a testament to your unwavering dedication, perseverance and commitment to the advancement of Zambia,” Ruto said.
He said the election result reflected the confidence Zambians had placed in Hichilema’s leadership and his ability to advance the country’s development and prosperity.
Ruto described Kenya and Zambia as brotherly nations and said the two countries had developed strong cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels.
“Kenya holds its relations with the Republic of Zambia in high esteem. Over the years, our two countries have fostered deep and enduring cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels,” he said.
The Kenyan President added that his country regarded Zambia as an important regional partner and ally.
“Kenya regards Zambia not only as a brotherly nation, but also as a valuable partner and ally in the region,” Ruto said.
He said he looked forward to working with Hichilema during his second term to strengthen and expand relations between the two countries.
“I wish you every success in your second term in office and continued peace, unity and prosperity for the people of Zambia,” Ruto said.
Hichilema’s re-election followed a closely watched poll in which he secured approximately 60 per cent of the vote, according to reports citing official results. His main challenger, Brian Mundubile, received about 38 per cent.
