DJ Sbu has defended Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina against social media backlash over her heritage. Adetshina, born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, faces criticism despite her South African roots.

In a YouTube video, DJ Sbu addressed the “selective outrage” of South Africans, advocating for positive energy and constructive actions instead of negativity. He questioned the focus on Adetshina’s background, emphasizing her legitimate entry into Miss SA with her South African ID.

Mofaya, the energy drink co-founded by DJ Sbu, is an official sponsor of Miss SA. Responding to a petition calling for Adetshina’s ban, DJ Sbu suggested redirecting such efforts towards community projects like building schools or funding bursaries.

Support for Adetshina is growing, with a counter-petition by Lindiwe Tom Mthethwa gaining 215 signatures. The petition condemns the discrimination against Adetshina, highlighting South Africa’s diversity and the need for representation in the pageant.

DJ Sbu noted the irony of the backlash, stating that the criticism is inadvertently promoting both Miss SA and Mofaya. He questioned if similar scrutiny would apply to other prominent South Africans with diverse backgrounds, including himself.

As the Miss SA 2024 event approaches, DJ Sbu expressed support for all contestants and his commitment to fostering a positive environment, encouraging young South Africans to dream big and ignore detractors.
