MBABANE, Eswatini – The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling gender-based violence (GBV) in Eswatini. Chargé d’Affaires Caitlin Piper made the statement during her participation in the country’s Gender-Based Violence Symposium.

Piper condemned GBV as “a human rights violation” that negatively impacts the lives of “all Emaswati – men, women, and children alike.” She warned of potential setbacks in progress made towards gender equality if the issue isn’t addressed.

“Unless we roundly condemn GBV as a society and foster a change in community norms, we run a very high risk of sliding backwards on some of the largest gains we’ve accomplished together,” Piper said.

The Chargé d’Affaires emphasized the U.S. government’s dedication to supporting the fight against GBV. “The United States government is proud to bring energy and resources” to this critical effort, Piper declared.
