The Lesotho Ministry of Environment and Forestry has commemorated the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists with herders and livestock farmers at Ha ’Matsa in Matelile, Mafeteng.
The event was held to recognise the contribution of pastoralists, who play a central role in caring for the country’s grazing land.
Minister of Environment and Forestry Thabo Mofosi said protecting the environment could contribute to healthier communities and improve livelihoods.
He said the Lesotho Government had set aside funds to support herders and livestock farmers whose proposed projects had been approved. The projects include environmental protection initiatives and income generating activities designed to strengthen household livelihoods.
Speaking on behalf of the pastoralists, Lehlohonolo Mohato of the ’Matsa Pastoralists Association thanked the ministry for the guidance provided to communities.
He said the training had helped improve the management and protection of rangelands.
Mohato also thanked the ministry for providing them with a container made from wetland grass, saying it would be useful, particularly during dry periods.
During the commemoration, Mofosi, with support from Catholic Relief Services, distributed 50 blankets and hats to pastoralists.
The United Nations declared 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists to raise awareness of the importance of grazing areas and the communities that depend on them. Rangelands cover about half of the world’s land and support food production, livelihoods, biodiversity and climate resilience.
Lesotho has also been carrying out activities in different districts to promote sustainable rangeland management, including the removal of invasive and harmful plant species from grazing areas.
