Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has reaffirmed her country’s support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, drawing a direct parallel between their struggle and Namibia’s own fight for independence.
The position was stated during a courtesy visit to the Namibian presidency by Mohamed Yeslem Beisat, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs and Special Envoy of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. He was accompanied by the Sahrawi Republic’s Ambassador to Angola, Hamdi El Khalil.
Beisat delivered a written message from Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali and conveyed warm greetings and appreciation from the Sahrawi head of state. He also expressed gratitude to President Nandi-Ndaitwah and the Namibian people for their continued solidarity with the Sahrawi cause.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah responded by noting that Namibia understands the weight of self-determination as a right, having endured its own hardships during its liberation struggle. She expressed hope that the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic would benefit from the same international solidarity and multilateral engagement that helped Namibia achieve independence.
She called on the United Nations to continue playing a central role in finding a peaceful and lasting resolution to the Western Sahara question and urged the broader international community to support the Sahrawi people’s legitimate aspirations.
