Ezulwini – The Eswatini Revenue Service and the University of Eswatini have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance artificial intelligence literacy and strengthen digital transformation within the tax authority.
The agreement, signed on Thursday, will see UNESWA’s AI Academy deliver a specialised institutional AI training programme for ERS employees, equipping them with the skills and competencies required to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven environment.
The ERS Commissioner General said the partnership goes beyond a formal agreement, describing it as a strategic collaboration aimed at building AI capability, enhancing taxpayer service delivery and positioning ERS for a data-driven future.
UNESWA Vice Chancellor Professor Justice M. Thwala welcomed the partnership, saying it was a timely step in preparing institutions for the age of artificial intelligence.
“The risk is that the technology moves faster than the people… We are signing this agreement because the work of revenue administration is changing, and the people who do that work deserve to be properly prepared for that change,” Prof. Thwala said.
He pointed to the need for training that equips employees with not only technical skills but also the ethics and governance required for responsible AI adoption.
The UNESWA AI Academy, coordinated by Professor Motsa under the Faculty of Science and Engineering, will deliver a comprehensive AI Literacy Pathway tailored specifically to the unique workflows, data sensitivities and legal frameworks of revenue administration.
