Addis Ababa – The Kingdom of Eswatini will assume the Chairmanship of the African Union Peace and Security Council in March, following the 1330th meeting of the Council at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Senator Pholile Shakantu addressed the Council, stressing the critical need for stability across Africa. She noted that instability in one region affects others, undermining development gains and straining humanitarian systems.

“Conflict and insecurity hinder collective efforts to achieve the aim of ‘Silencing the Guns’ and obstruct the aspirations delineated in Agenda 2063, which envisions a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Africa,” the Minister said.

Senator Shakantu added, “The Kingdom of Eswatini reaffirms its strong commitment to African-led solutions to African challenges.” She highlighted the Peace and Security Council’s role in conflict prevention, management, and resolution, noting that preventive diplomacy, early warning, mediation, and political engagement are essential to stop emerging risks from escalating into full-blown conflicts.

The Minister also referenced United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719, which calls for predictable and sustainable financing for AU-led peace operations. She said its effective implementation would enhance the Council’s capacity, boost African ownership, and improve the effectiveness of peace initiatives.

Eswatini, which was elected to the AU Peace and Security Council representing the Southern Africa region in February 2025, will take over the chairmanship from Egypt. Senator Shakantu expressed her government’s eagerness to work with all Member States and the AU Commission to promote dialogue, address root causes of conflict, and contribute to continental efforts to “Silencing the Guns” in line with Agenda 2063.
