Sixteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha scored in the 10th minute of stoppage time to give Liverpool a dramatic 3-2 win over 10-man Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Monday.
Liverpool looked in control after Ryan Gravenberch’s 35th-minute strike and Hugo Ekitike’s early second-half goal put them two up. Newcastle were reduced to 10 men when Anthony Gordon received a red card for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk.
Newcastle fought back, with Bruno Guimaraes heading in a goal in the 57th minute and substitute William Osula equalising in the 88th. However, Ngumoha, making his Premier League debut, broke Newcastle hearts with a precise finish past Nick Pope, keeping Liverpool’s winning start intact.
Ngumoha, who turns 17 this Friday, impressed fans after scoring twice in pre-season. Sent on by manager Arne Slot for Cody Gakpo, Ngumoha capitalised on Newcastle’s tired legs and found the net with calm composure, becoming the fourth-youngest scorer in Premier League history and the second 16-year-old to score a winning goal after Wayne Rooney.
Ekitike also extended his scoring streak to three matches, dealing with jeers from the home crowd while proving a key part of Liverpool’s attack. Despite defensive lapses, Liverpool showed formidable firepower and will host Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.
Newcastle endured a tense night as St James’ Park roared under the lights. The Magpies’ lack of a natural striker contributed to early struggles, and with Gordon suspended for their next match against Leeds United, Eddie Howe will look to rebuild ahead of a crucial fixture.
