Agadir, Morocco – Record-holders Egypt claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over South Africa in Group B of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations at Adrar Stadium on 26 December. Mohamed Salah converted a penalty just before half-time to give the Pharaohs the lead.

The first half saw Egypt dominate possession and earn multiple chances, culminating in the decisive penalty after Salah was fouled in the box by South Africa’s Khuliso Mudau. Moments later, Egypt’s Mohamed Hany received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Mokoena, leaving the team with ten men for the remainder of the match.

South Africa, taking advantage of the numerical edge, launched sustained attacks in the second half. Despite 16 attempts and seven on target, the Bafana Bafana could not break through Egypt’s defence. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy produced several critical saves, including denying efforts from Makgopa, Faisal, and Modiba.

Egypt maintained their slim lead through tactical defence and late substitutions, holding firm during intense pressure in added time. South Africa were denied a potential penalty in stoppage time following a contentious VAR review, leaving the final score at 1-0.

With the win, Egypt tops Group B with six points and becomes the first team to advance to the Round of 16. South Africa remain second on three points, while Zimbabwe and Angola occupy third and fourth positions respectively.
