The Dedza Calomue One Stop Border Post connecting Malawi and Mozambique has improved trade efficiency, following a study visit by the Southern African Development Community Secretariat from November 18 to 21, 2025. The assessment was led by SADC Senior Programme Officer Alcides Monteiro, focusing on border operating hours, coordinated border management, the OSBP initiative, transit procedures, and ICT connectivity.
Border managers Ms Lucy Chikhawo of the Malawi Revenue Authority and Mr Jaime Sebastião Cucu of the Mozambique Revenue Authority received the SADC team, along with other government agencies stationed at the post.
Located along the Nacala Corridor, Dedza Calomue facilitates trade not only between Malawi and Mozambique but also for countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The border operates under a juxtaposed model, which has streamlined goods movement significantly.
Officially inaugurated on June 6, 2025, by Presidents Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi and Daniel Francisco Chapo of Mozambique, the post now runs from 6 am to 9 pm, handling about 80 trucks daily. The assessment also noted a strategic reduction in the number of border agencies present, allowing Customs, Immigration, Standards Bureau, and Sanitary and Phytosanitary services to coordinate more efficiently.
Dedza Calomue is the seventh OSBP in the SADC region, providing a model for trade facilitation and regional integration.
