Accra – Ghana and the Kyrgyz Republic have agreed to expand bilateral cooperation following their first Political Consultations, held in Accra on Thursday, 1 October 2026.

The meeting brought together Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his Kyrgyz counterpart, Zheenbek Kulubaev, for discussions on strengthening relations between the two countries and identifying areas for practical cooperation.

Ablakwa welcomed Kulubaev and his delegation to Ghana, describing the consultations as an important milestone in the development of relations between Accra and Bishkek.

The Ghanaian minister recalled his official visit to Bishkek in March 2026, which was the first official visit to the Kyrgyz Republic by an African foreign minister. He said the visit opened a new chapter in Ghana Kyrgyzstan relations.

Ablakwa also congratulated Kyrgyzstan on its election as a non permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027 to 2028 term and expressed Ghana’s readiness to work closely with the country during its tenure.

Kulubaev thanked the Ghanaian government and people for the reception given to him and his delegation. He also expressed appreciation for Ghana’s support for Kyrgyzstan’s successful campaign for a non permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

The Kyrgyz foreign minister conveyed greetings from Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and said his country was interested in expanding its engagement with Africa.

Ghana was identified as an important partner and potential gateway to West Africa as Kyrgyzstan seeks to broaden its economic and diplomatic links across the continent.

Kulubaev also expressed Kyrgyzstan’s willingness to cooperate with Ghana on issues affecting developing countries and efforts to build a more representative and effective multilateral system.

The consultations covered a broad range of sectors, including agriculture, education, mining, digital transformation, sports, healthcare and people to people exchanges.

The two sides also discussed trade and investment, livestock development, scholarships, climate change, tourism and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.

On the diplomatic front, Ghana and Kyrgyzstan agreed to improve coordination on matters of shared interest, including reform of the United Nations Security Council, international peace and security, sustainable development, climate change and the participation of developing countries in global decision making.

The consultations ended with the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding aimed at providing a framework for closer cooperation.

The first agreement covers cooperation in physical culture and sports between Ghana’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the State Agency of Physical Culture and Sports under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The second MoU covers agriculture and was signed between Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Kyrgyz Republic’s Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry.

The third agreement establishes cooperation between the Foreign Service Institute under Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic named after Kazy Dikambaev.
