Mbabane, Eswatini: The Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini has launched an investigation after two United States government personnel were injured when they were inadvertently shot by members of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force during an operation in the Lubombo Region.
The incident occurred in Maphiveni on Friday, September 11, 2026, at about 10pm, according to a government statement issued on Monday.
The UEDF was conducting an operation targeting suspected smuggling activities in the Maphiveni area when the two US government personnel were accidentally shot.
Acting Government Spokesperson Thabile Mdluli said the government was treating the incident with the seriousness it warrants.
“The UEDF has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Mdluli said.
The government said it was already communicating with the US Government and would continue engaging through diplomatic channels as the investigation progresses.
The statement did not provide further details on the identities or condition of the injured US personnel, nor did it disclose the circumstances that resulted in the shooting.
The Eswatini Government also sought to reassure both the public and the United States Government that it was taking the matter seriously.
“The Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini remains committed to preserving and strengthening its cordial and longstanding relations with the United States of America,” Mdluli said.
The statement was issued on September 14, three days after the incident.
