Johannesburg – Volkswagen South Africa has unveiled the Amarok PanAmericana, a 222kW petrol bakkie priced at R1 099 000, making it the fastest Amarok sold locally. The model, equipped with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine producing 452Nm of torque, can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 180 km/h.
The Amarok PanAmericana faces stiff competition from the Toyota Hilux GR-S at R999 000 and the Ford Ranger Wildtrak at R1 087 000. While the Amarok outruns these rivals in straight-line acceleration, its claimed fuel consumption of 9.9 litres per 100 km may see higher real-world figures compared with the turbodiesel competitors.
Compared to other Amarok models, the 222kW PanAmericana slots between the 154kW/500Nm 2.0-litre BiTDI at R1 094 500 and the 184kW/600Nm 3.0-litre V6 PanAmericana at R1 190 900, while the Amarok Aventura doubles at R1 252 200.
The bakkie comes packed with features, including LED matrix headlights, 18-inch all-terrain wheels, a power roller shutter for the load bed, and a 12-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Inside, a full digital dashboard, Harman Kardon eight-speaker audio, 10-way electric seats, 360-degree cameras, and driver-assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring complete the package.
