Lilongwe – Southern African Development Community (SADC) Executive Secretary Elias Mpedi Magosi arrived in Lilongwe on 14 September to take part in the regional body’s Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) for Malawi’s 2025 general election.
He joined Honourable Themba Nhlanganiso Masuku, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Eswatini, who is leading the mission. The two will work closely with the SADC Secretariat, the Organ Troika — currently represented by Eswatini and Tanzania — and members of the SADC Electoral Advisory Council. Their role is to meet with stakeholders across Malawi to assess the electoral environment and preparations.
Ahead of the polls, SEOM scheduled a pre-election briefing for 15 September with heads of international observer missions accredited in the country. On election day, 16 September, both Masuku and Magosi are expected to visit selected polling stations before releasing a preliminary statement on how the vote was conducted.
SADC has deployed 80 observers across Malawi’s 28 districts, drawing participants from nine member states, including Eswatini, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
