Osaka, Japan – Eswatini’s Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, met with Japanese officials and private sector leaders on Thursday, August 21, 2025, to discuss deepening collaboration between the two nations. The meeting took place during Expo 2025 in Osaka and focused on key sectors including public-private partnerships, energy, trade, and digital innovation.

During discussions, both sides explored public-private partnership models aimed at improving infrastructure and fostering inclusive economic growth in Eswatini. Energy cooperation was also a major topic, with Japanese companies presenting expertise to support sustainable energy projects tailored to the Kingdom’s development needs.

Trade and export opportunities were highlighted, with potential for the export of woodchips from Eswatini-based companies such as TWK, Shiselweni Forest, and Montigny. The Japanese garment accessories company YKK, which has operated in Eswatini for nearly 50 years, shared its positive experience and commitment to ongoing collaboration in the country.

The meeting also addressed the potential supply of anthracite coal to Japan, following reduced demand in the South African market after the closure of several smelters.

Minister Khumalo stated that Eswatini will continue to pursue strategic engagements with Japan to increase exports, attract foreign direct investment, modernize infrastructure, and advance digital transformation across the Kingdom.
