Ezulwini – Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla launched workshops on 8 April 2026 at Happy Valley Hotel to introduce the African Union Charter for Older Persons Protocol and the African Disability Protocol to government officials and stakeholders. The two-day sessions are hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) as part of the process of ratifying these legal instruments.
The DPM noted that while Africa has a youthful population, elders carry traditions, values, and resilience but often face neglect and barriers to essential services. “For Eswatini, ratification is of particular importance. Our elders are custodians of culture, language, and tradition. Ratifying this protocol will strengthen frameworks for social protection, healthcare, and community support. It will safeguard older persons against poverty, isolation, and discrimination, while affirming their rightful place as active participants in our development agenda. Moreover, it will align Eswatini with continental standards, reinforcing our commitment to human rights and sustainable development as envisioned in Agenda 2063,” she said.
On the African Disability Protocol, which was adopted in 2018 and entered into force in 2024, Dladla said it provides a legal framework specific to Africa to protect the rights of persons with disabilities. “Ratification by Eswatini will reinforce the Persons with Disabilities Act of 2018 and the National Disability Plan of Action, ensuring inclusive development and equal participation in education, employment, health, and politics,” she added.
The DPM also highlighted the Marrakesh Treaty, which facilitates the production and sharing of accessible-format books for learners who are blind, visually impaired, or print disabled, promoting inclusive education through braille, audio, and digital materials.
