Maseru – The Right Honourable Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane officially inaugurated the Lesotho–South Africa Business Council in Maseru on Tuesday, creating a formal platform for cross-border private sector collaboration.
Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Matekane said the council aims to strengthen economic ties between the two nations, which are closely linked through trade, labour, value chains and shared development goals. He added that the initiative will help businesses address cross-border challenges, improve trade, attract investment, support small and medium enterprises, and advocate for better infrastructure and harmonised regulations.
The council was developed through cooperation between the Private Sector Foundation of Lesotho and South Africa’s Black Business Council, building on years of dialogue to address challenges such as the smooth movement of goods, capital and services.
Tuesday’s sessions focused on financing the regional corridor and turning border posts into drivers of economic growth, with industry leaders and economic advisors sharing insights on streamlining systems and creating a competitive investment environment. Afternoon presentations explored reforms to the investment climate and strategies for enterprise development, alongside the signing of founding documents and diplomatic commitments.
