Skukuza – Communities living along the borders of Kruger National Park and Mthethomusha Nature Reserve in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province are set to benefit from a R37 million fencing project aimed at putting an end to the ongoing human-wildlife conflict in the area.
The project was presented to community members at a meeting convened by Kruger National Park and civic organisation People and Parks at Spelanyane Community Hall, which was also attended by the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency.
High quality fencing will be installed along the boundaries of the two protected areas to prevent wildlife from straying into surrounding communities and to curb illegal poaching activities within the parks.
The project is expected to get under way by the end of May 2026 and is scheduled for completion within twelve months.
Following the community engagement process, a main contractor will be appointed, along with local contractors who will participate as subcontractors. Employment opportunities will also be created for members of the surrounding communities to ensure the smooth implementation of the project.
The announcement received a warm welcome from community members, traditional council leaders, and business forums who attended the meeting.
