Manchester United have ended Ruben Amorim’s turbulent 14-month tenure as manager, following a series of disappointing results and a fiery outburst directed at the club’s board.
Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024, managed 63 matches at Old Trafford, winning only 24 and leaving with a win rate of 38 per cent. The Red Devils are currently sixth in the Premier League, three points behind Liverpool in the race for a top-four finish.
The Portuguese coach came under intense scrutiny after a 1-1 draw with Leeds, where he publicly criticised the club hierarchy. “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach,” he told reporters. He added that he expected all departments, including scouting and the sporting director, to fulfil their roles. Less than 24 hours later, the club announced his dismissal.
Amorim’s tenure was marked by struggles to implement his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation and inconsistent performances, including dropped points at home against Wolves, who had just two points at the time. Despite occasional improvements, signs of his footballing philosophy rarely solidified.
Manchester United issued a brief statement thanking Amorim for his contributions and wishing him well for the future. An interim replacement has already been lined up as the club looks to secure Champions League football and stabilise their defence, which has conceded 30 goals in 20 matches.
