Manchester – Idrissa Gueye has issued a public apology after being sent off for striking Michael Keane during Everton’s 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday.
The incident occurred just 13 minutes into the match when Gueye reacted after Keane criticised a careless pass. Referee Tony Harrington immediately showed a red card for the Everton midfielder’s action. Despite playing with ten men, Everton held on for the victory thanks to a goal from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Gueye later apologised in the dressing room and took to Instagram to express regret. “I want to apologise first to my team-mate Michael Keane,” he wrote. “I take full responsibility for my reaction. I also apologise to my teammates, the staff, the fans and the club. What happened does not reflect who I am or the values I stand for. Emotions can run high, but nothing justifies such behaviour. I’ll make sure it never happens again.”
Manager David Moyes defended the team’s resilience and praised their attitude on the field. He told reporters that while the sending off was unfortunate, he values players holding each other accountable in pursuit of results.
Everton’s victory moves them to eleventh in the league, ahead of Merseyside rivals Liverpool. United struggled to break through Everton’s defence, despite enjoying a man advantage for almost 80 minutes. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made key saves, including a close-range header from Joshua Zirkzee.
Manchester United manager Amorim expressed frustration over his players’ decision-making and finishing. He confirmed Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko were unavailable due to injuries, with Cunha expected to return against Crystal Palace.
Everton now turn their focus to hosting Newcastle United at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
