Ezulwini – Day One of the Disaster Risk Management Forum set the tone for urgent action yesterday at the Happy Valley Hotel in Ezulwini, where experts from across the SADC region gathered to discuss the future of disaster preparedness.

The National Disaster Management Agency reported that the central message was the need for countries to reduce their reliance on reactive relief efforts and instead strengthen resilience strategies. Scientists warned that between 2035 and 2065, Mozambique as well as the south western and south eastern regions of South Africa are expected to face more frequent dry spells, posing serious threats to livelihoods.

Speakers stressed that although drought cannot be prevented, communities can prepare for its impact through investment in resilience, innovation, and inclusive governance.

Offering a different perspective, Lethumusa Simelane from the National Archives spoke on the importance of Indigenous knowledge in managing disasters. He suggested that humanity’s strained relationship with nature may be contributing to recurring hazards, sparking interest among delegates who requested more input on the subject as discussions resume today.

The forum has brought together scientists, policymakers, practitioners and disaster management experts from the region to strengthen cooperation in addressing climate-related risks.
