Addis Ababa – Kenya President William Samoei Ruto has welcomed the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), describing it as Africa’s largest hydropower facility with an estimated capacity of 6,450 megawatts. The dam, fully funded by the Ethiopian people, was officially opened in the Benishangul-Gumuz region.

Ruto said Kenya is ready to sign a power purchase agreement to import surplus electricity from Ethiopia, aiming to boost industries, ICT hubs, manufacturing, and agro-processing. He added that the deal could create jobs and strengthen regional competitiveness.

The president noted ongoing discussions among Nile Basin countries and called for continued trilateral talks between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan to reach a fair agreement on shared water resources.

Eswatini Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini attended the inauguration, along with leaders from Djibouti, Somalia, South Sudan, Barbados, and the African Union Commission.
