Lusaka – Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has been sworn in for a second five year term after taking the Oath of Office before Chief Justice Mumba Malila at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka on Tuesday.
Thousands of Zambians filled the stadium terraces to witness the inauguration, which marked the formal start of Hichilema’s new term following his victory in the August 13 general election. He was sworn in alongside Vice President Mutale Nalumango, who also took her Oath of Office.
Hichilema arrived at the ceremony with First Lady Mutinta Hichilema, who wore white and red attire for the occasion.
The President was later accorded a presidential guard of honour, which included the Zambian national anthem, a military fly past and a 21 gun salute. He was also expected to inspect the inauguration guard in his capacity as Commander in Chief of the armed forces.
The inauguration drew several regional leaders, including the Presidents of Tanzania, Kenya, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. Eswatini was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla, who joined Heads of State, government officials and other high level representatives in Lusaka.
China sent a representative at vice presidential level, while other countries including the United States, United Arab Emirates, Rwanda and Malawi were represented by senior officials.
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa congratulated Hichilema and Nalumango on the start of their new term.

“Zambia continues to serve as a beacon of democratic stability, peaceful governance, and unity on our continent. Watching the peaceful exchange and consolidation of power today reminds us of the shared bonds of history, culture, and progress that deeply connect our two nations.
“We look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relations, deepening our economic cooperation, and working hand-in-hand within SADC and the African Union to build a more prosperous and integrated region for all our people.
“I wish President Hichilema and Vice President Mutale Nalumango abundant wisdom, excellent health, and immense success as they lead Zambia forward. May the Almighty God bless the Republic of Zambia.
