Johannesburg – South African police shot a man on Friday who attempted to hijack an official vehicle transporting officers attending the G20 Leaders Summit. The suspect, acting alone, reportedly carried a toy gun and tried to force officers out of the vehicle. His condition has not been confirmed.
The incident occurred amid tight security measures surrounding the two-day summit at the Nasrec Expo Centre, where presidents and senior government officials from 42 countries are attending. Delegates include China’s Premier Li Qiang, Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chính, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The venue has been heavily secured, with nearly every entrance blocked and police patrolling the perimeter. Over 3,500 officers were deployed, supported by military personnel on high alert. Intelligence agencies are providing daily threat assessments under the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure.
Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, deputy national commissioner for policing, said the security teams act on verified intelligence and will continue operations throughout the summit. Operation Shanela, a nationwide crime-prevention initiative, has complemented summit security through roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, stop-and-searches, and high-visibility patrols across all nine provinces.
