NEW YORK, United States: Eswatini has strengthened its diplomatic engagement with the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta following the signing of a diplomatic declaration in New York.
The declaration was signed by Eswatini Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Senator Pholile Shakantu on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Shakantu signed the declaration alongside the Order of Malta’s Grand Counsellor, H.E. Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo, who also serves as Grand Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Sovereign Military Order of Malta is one of the oldest institutions of Western and Christian civilisation and maintains diplomatic relations with numerous states around the world.
The declaration sets out the two parties’ intention to develop and strengthen cooperation and friendship for their mutual benefit. It also provides a framework for promoting reciprocal understanding, expanding cooperation and developing productive relations between Eswatini and the Order of Malta.
The agreement reflects a shared interest in deepening engagement while identifying areas where the two sides can work together for mutual benefit.
Shakantu said the Eswatini Government considers stronger international partnerships an important part of the country’s foreign policy and diplomatic engagement.
According to the minister, the signing also demonstrates Eswatini’s commitment to constructive international cooperation and to establishing partnerships that support mutual understanding and common objectives.
Minister Shakantu said: “We welcome this development as the Kingdom of Eswatini as it represents an important milestone in our relations with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.”
