Pretoria, South Africa: President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared Wednesday, 4 November 2026, a public holiday to allow South Africans to participate in the upcoming Local Government Elections.
The declaration was made on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, in terms of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act of 1994.
The public holiday will apply throughout South Africa, with voters expected to use the day to exercise their democratic and constitutional right to vote for local representatives.
The Local Government Elections will give registered voters an opportunity to elect public representatives who will serve at municipal level and influence decisions affecting service delivery in their communities.
Ramaphosa called on all registered voters to take advantage of the public holiday and participate in the elections.
Voters have also been reminded that they may only cast their ballots at polling stations in the wards where they are registered.
Those planning to travel on election day will not be permitted to transfer their votes to polling stations outside their designated wards.
The President has also called on employers to make arrangements that allow employees to exercise their Constitutional right to vote on 4 November.
