MBOMBELA, SOUTH AFRICA – Two young men aged 18 and 19 have appeared before the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Lusanda Mathabela, who was allegedly stabbed multiple times inside her home in Mattafin on 3 November.
The pair, one of whom is believed to be Lusanda’s ex-boyfriend, are accused of carrying out the brutal attack that claimed her life. Their bail application has been postponed to 12 November 2025.
The courtroom was tense as relatives of the deceased expressed anger over the accused seeking bail. “It is disgusting that they even want bail, claiming one of them is a Grade 12 learner who has exams to write. His life continues while our granddaughter’s life was cut short,” said Lusanda’s grandmother, Sibongile Mathabela.
The family, supported by friends and community members, has vowed to attend every hearing until justice is served. Lusanda’s murder has sparked widespread outrage in both South Africa and Eswatini, reigniting calls for stronger measures against gender-based violence.
The two suspects remain in custody until their next court appearance as the case continues to attract national attention.
