Johannesburg – South African police are probing the murder of a 45-year-old man who was shot several times at the parking lot of Milpark Hospital on Wednesday night, in what is suspected to have been a planned assassination.
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that the victim had just visited a friend at the hospital when he was attacked shortly after 8pm. “The police have opened a case of murder and investigations are underway,” she said. The man’s identity has not yet been released and no arrests have been made.
Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee suggested the shooting appeared to be a hit, noting the victim was repeatedly shot.
The incident comes as South Africa continues to face violent crime, which also has spill-over effects in neighbouring countries including Eswatini, where cross-border travel and trade with Johannesburg are frequent.
Meanwhile, in the Eastern Cape, South African police arrested a 30-year-old suspect linked to the attempted murder of an officer during routine patrols in Missionvale. Officers later traced the man near Nelson Mandela University’s Missionvale campus and recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile condemned rising attacks on police officers, warning that criminals who target law enforcement would face the full might of the law.
