Mbabane – The Ministry of ICT’s Research, Science, Technology and Innovation department (RSTI) has officially launched the Eswatini Young Academy of Sciences (EYAS), creating a platform for young researchers to collaborate, shape science policy and promote innovation. The launch took place yesterday, September 30, 2025, in Mbabane.
The EYAS constitution was unveiled by Under Secretary Ms. Macanjana Motsa on behalf of the ICT Principal Secretary. She described the initiative as a bold step towards investing in the intellectual potential of the nation’s youth, calling the academy a space where curiosity can be nurtured and transformed into progress.
The event drew representatives from the SADC Secretariat, as well as international guests from South Africa, Lesotho, the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS), the Lesotho Young Academy of Science (LesYAS) and the Global Young Academy.
RSTI Director Dr. Rejoice Maseko said the launch was a turning point for Eswatini’s efforts to empower young people through science, technology and innovation. She paid tribute to the late Professor Lydia Makhubu, the first Swazi to join the African Academy of Sciences, whose work continues to inspire future generations. Dr. Maseko also recalled King Sobhuza II’s vision from 1972, which placed education and research at the centre of national development.
Addressing youth challenges, the Under Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Mr. Mzwandile Mthethwa, said the country must respond to rising unemployment by creating opportunities through science and technology. He pointed out that initiatives such as EYAS could help unlock entrepreneurial ventures and career paths for young people.
Mr. Mthethwa further urged EYAS to register with the Eswatini National Youth Council to gain access to additional resources, expand visibility and take part in national discussions on youth development. He said such collaboration would ensure that young scientists contribute to shaping the future of the country.
