LONDON, ENGLAND – Chelsea and Crystal Palace played out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge yesterday as both sides struggled to convert chances in the London derby.
Chelsea started strongly, with Marc Cucurella’s early header cleared off the line, but the visitors responded through Eberechi Eze. His 13th-minute free-kick beat Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez but was ruled out by VAR after Marc Guehi was judged to be too close to the wall.
Crystal Palace looked to counter, with Jean-Philippe Mateta denied by Sanchez after a through ball from Adam Wharton, while Chelsea’s substitutes, including Estevao and Andrey Santos, tested the visiting defence but failed to score. Liam Delap and Santos also had late efforts that went wide.
Chelsea, fresh from UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup victories, dominated possession but struggled to penetrate a resolute Palace backline. Estevao injected pace and energy after coming on in the second half, creating opportunities that ultimately went begging.
Palace, under Oliver Glasner, relied on counter-attacks and tight defensive organisation. Eze, Wharton and Guehi were particularly active, with Eze repeatedly threatening Chelsea’s goal. Despite being pushed back for long periods, Palace managed to hold Chelsea at bay and secure a point.
The draw leaves both teams looking to adjust ahead of upcoming fixtures. Chelsea will face West Ham United next Friday, while Palace prepare for their first European outing of the season in the Conference League play-offs against Fredrikstad on Thursday and a league trip to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
