JOHANNESBURG – South African singer and songwriter Filah Lah Lah marked a milestone in her career by appearing on the Expresso Show on August 1, 2025, following the release of her debut visual album, On Air.

Filah, whose genre-blending style fuses R&B, Afrobeat, jazz, folk, neo-soul and indie rock, spoke about her artistic journey and the deeply personal elements woven into her latest project. The interview was aired live from the SABC studios and introduced viewers to the visuals and sounds of her work, which she described as a “feast for the eyes and ears.”

She said the album was inspired by the impact media had on her upbringing — from radio to movies — and wanted On Air to reflect that connection through both its audio and visual presentation.

During the interview, she opened up about growing up feeling different and finding a sense of belonging through music. “Writing songs just kind of fit,” she said. “It allowed me to be different in that space and be accepted.”

She added that she hopes her music reaches those who feel out of place, calling it “a home for the weirdos.”

On genre influences, Filah credited artists such as Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse, and Nina Simone. She said their sounds shaped her own approach to music, which she now describes as “expansively South African.”

The artist also reflected on a recent career highlight — opening for Tyler ICU in her hometown. “I didn’t even know I was on the radar,” she said. “It was shocking but beautiful, and it gave me the kind of validation I didn’t know I needed.”

Filah said she thrives best during intimate performances but is open to larger stages, especially with a growing fan base. She admitted pioneering a new sound on the South African music scene can be lonely but believes the reception so far has been worth the risk.

She wrapped up the interview with a live performance of songs from the new album.
