Manchester United recorded a 2–0 victory over Manchester City in a Premier League Manchester derby played on Saturday, January 17, at Old Trafford, marking a notable win in Michael Carrick’s first match back in charge at the stadium.
The derby saw United outplay the reigning champions with a disciplined and direct approach, securing the three points through second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu after a dominant overall performance.
United started on the front foot and nearly took the lead inside the opening minutes when Harry Maguire connected with a Bruno Fernandes corner, his header crashing against the crossbar. The hosts continued to press and twice found the net before half-time, first through Amad Diallo and later Fernandes, but both goals were ruled out for offside.
City struggled to settle as United’s intensity disrupted their rhythm, particularly in defence. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was kept busy throughout the first half, producing key saves to deny Amad, Casemiro and Dorgu as United continued to threaten on transitions.
The breakthrough arrived in the 65th minute when Fernandes launched a swift counter attack and threaded a well-weighted pass into Mbeumo’s path. The forward showed composure to place his finish into the bottom corner beyond Donnarumma.
United doubled their lead in the 76th minute. Substitute Matheus Cunha beat his marker down the left and delivered a low cross into the box, where Dorgu timed his run to perfection, getting ahead of Rico Lewis to score from close range.
Pep Guardiola responded with changes, withdrawing Erling Haaland, who appeared to be struggling physically, alongside Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva. Despite the substitutions, City failed to gain control as United remained organised at the back and dangerous on the counter.
Mason Mount thought he had added a third goal in stoppage time after converting from Cunha’s square pass, but VAR ruled the effort out for offside in the build-up.
Guardiola and Carrick exchanged brief words at full time before the City manager headed towards the away end, where a number of supporters had already departed following a difficult afternoon for the visitors.
The win moved Manchester United up the Premier League standings and handed City a damaging defeat in the title race after a derby in which United created the clearer chances and dictated the tempo from early on.
