Trade between Mozambique and South Africa now exceeds two billion dollars annually, making Mozambique South Africa’s largest trading partner in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Puleng Chaba, South Africa’s Chargé d’Affaires in Mozambique, told AIM that geographic proximity, historical ties, and shared economic interests drive the strong business exchange. Mozambican exports to South Africa include aluminium from the Mozal smelter, electricity from the Cahora Bassa dam, agricultural products such as cotton, sugar, and tobacco, as well as minerals like titanium and gemstones.
South Africa exports vehicles, transport equipment, processed foods, electrical equipment, agricultural and construction machinery, and chemicals to Mozambique. Chaba said between 1,700 and 2,000 trucks cross the border daily carrying a variety of goods, some of which are re-exported to other countries.
South Africa ranks just behind China and India in bilateral trade with Mozambique. Over 300 South African companies currently operate in Mozambique in sectors including energy, agriculture, trade, and financial services. Chaba noted that South African businesses aim not only to trade but also to strengthen relationships, promote investment, and drive inclusive growth.
The remarks were made ahead of the 60th Maputo International Fair (FACIM 2025), scheduled from 25 to 31 August.
