Pigg’s Peak police have opened an investigation into the theft of more than E200 000 from a women’s savings and borrowing group in Mgululu.
The group, formed by 53 women at the start of 2025, appointed a treasurer from their community to manage their Mobile Money stokvel account. Members deposited their monthly savings digitally while the treasurer initially attended physical meetings.
Problems arose in May when the treasurer began skipping meetings, interacting only remotely. Members continued sending money as she assured them the savings were secure. In August, she reportedly persuaded the women to hand over the cellphone containing the Mobile Money sim card, claiming she would return it after charging. The phone was never returned, and police say a sim swap may have occurred.
By December, when it was time to share the accumulated savings, the treasurer allegedly gave excuses and delayed the payout. Investigations now indicate that E208 472 was stolen from the group.
The theft was reported to Pigg’s Peak police on 8 January 2026, and a docket was opened. Officers are gathering evidence as the investigation continues.
